REBECCA LIPSITCH
ARTIST STATEMENT
I work with the purist primal mind.
Do we separate disciplines as a child? No. Is playing with a found pebble and then placing it in one's room transforming the pebble from science to art? No. It’s just play.
I like to imagine that what I do is play. My play is achieved in two ways.
DADAists created what I believe to be the beginning of pure chance-based creation. Placing the emphasis of chance-based creation as a positive form of depersonalization is the revolutionizing force to democratize art. This is my first approach to creation.
My second approach is through the quasi theatrical reproduction of intense, acute observation of the everyday. I believe that human dialogue, whether that be through conversation, memories, body language, or through an impaired exchange of thoughts is the essence of human connection. I create experiences that hope to replicate some of these interactions.
In each case, the viewer is invited to participate through interaction. Whether that be through the physical wear of Contello designs, a hit of the piñata in iceberg celebration, or an intense moment of solitude in psychological solitary, I invite the participants to play with my work in the ways most beneficial to them.
